Being Sick Is Boring

Being sick is boring...I don't even have an appetite, so eating for excitement isn't even an option. But eat I must. So my second pot of soup is on the stove. Does anyone else find making your own sick soup depressing?

So we're in 2012 now. My new years resolution is to spend less time surfing the internet for videos, images and messages that fill a void of boredom or loneliness. The Internet can be an incredibly large time suck. 2012 will be the year of productive interneting!

Lots have happened since my last post...I moved back to my hometown Toronto, got a bartending job, started an internship at WORN fashion journal, turned 22, experienced heartbreak, fell off my bike, picked up some ice skates...

Now that the waters have settled and the temperatures are dropping, I feel inspired to get posting again. I'm more obsessed with clothes than ever before - Working for WORN has made me more thoughtful about fashion - the politics, history, personal stories, subcultures, ideas and contexts behind what we wear.

I wore the above outfit to work (who says bartenders have to look slutty?) I love my bar - every shift is an opportunity to play dress up and try new things. But more on that later!!!

Last Wednesday I got together with Yuli Sato to take photos for her etsy shop Digest and Curtsy. She's a miracle worker. I was sad and super distracted that day and was worried the photos weren't going to turn out - but a good photographer takes all the work out of it! I'm so happy with how they turned out, especially the first one. Thanks Yuli xx

In the winter I was on a mission to find Revlons new shade Orange Flip but it hasn't come to Canada yet. On my last trip home, I found it within seconds on a trip to the States with my dad and I couldn't be happier. It's texture is not as good as NARS Heat Wave (my standby lipstick and true make up love forever) but the color is pretty damn close. And at $6.99 for a tube for Revlon, I'll probably never purchase NARS heat wave again.

I've been living in these Levis for the past week and they are the first pair of jeans I've ever "worked in". They started out a bit snug but I wore them anyways through this weeks wonderful adventures - a heat wave, riding on a motorcycle, eating and drinking in the park and dancing through the largest downpour of my life. This top, well, I love it to bits but I haven't worn it out of the house yet - the teeny little number!

I found a quote this week on things about love that instantly guided me to embrace the kind of summer I want to have - one where I can be alone but not lonely. Where I can be social without basing my happiness, identity and self worth on the relationships around me...its something i've done all my life. And most important, I want to follow my heart and do what I want to do.

Montreal's Finest: The Wheel Club

I've been to the Wheel Club three times now and each time I go, I want to hug the place and it's people for existing. It's a country club that opens it's doors every Monday for Hillbilly Night. I love the line dancing, the music, the beer in iced buckets, the $2 chip bowls and the fact that I am enjoying these things alongside my friends, and people twice, and three times my age. This Monday was special because Shauna went on stage to sing and I am so proud of her for going up!!

This past Monday was also interesting because I'm trying to talk to people more. To drop the anxiety around approaching people and simply say "Hi, how's your night going?" So basic but I never to do it! I used to wait for a really obvious opening line, to be introduced, for something interesting to say but I'm beginning to realize that young and old, people just want to be talked to and listened to and there is something so human about making even the simplest and briefest of connections.

I watched the most incredible film, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” about Jean Dominique Bauby, the French editor of Elle, who had a rare stroke which paralyzed him almost totally except for the ability to blink with his right eye. Which is what he used to communicate - and write a memoir, letter by letter.

I hopped over to the Citizen Vintage shop the other night to celebrate Izzy's birthday! I met these girls by modeling for their etsy shops in the winter and have come to really care about these lovely ladies. Cameras were flying everywhere, I got to meet Tara-Lynn who I've inter-loved for the past year, and I was in the presence of macaroons. I'd say the macaroons made this a "blogger meet up" but it felt more like hanging out with friends.

I'm wearing my collar made by Izzy with a gaudy pearl necklace underneath, an H and M crop top, vintage slacks, a poncho thing I found in the garbage and thrifted zara heels.

The Breaking Point

On Thursday I gave my notice at work so I can enjoy my last summer in Montreal before making a big move to Toronto. I'm glad I've been a cook for the last five months but I'm dying to paint my nails again and wear jewelry and lazily bask in the sun. I'll be in the kitchen for another few weeks so I'm focusing on doing happy things until then - today it includes streaming a hilarious satirical comedy about summer camp (with Amy Poeler! here) and dancing around my messy apartment in my underwear and new shoes (5 dolla).

Silver Streak

At the beginning of summer I died a silver streak into the front of my hair that has now faded to a greenish blonde. Next I plan to dye it blue. At times I feel it doesn't suit me, so I part my hair in such a way that it doesn't show. But in other moments, when I'm out and getting rowdy or drunk, dancing perhaps,mingling you could say, I'll flip my front part to the left and let the streak take the stage. If you are in Montreal I highly recommend Salon Identite, where I hands down, recieved the most amazing cut of my life. AND It's a cozy, political, queer positive space, run by two of the best hair stylists in the city. You can read more about it here.

Mile End Fruiterie and my mom!

My mom came to visit at the end of May, and we had a decadent time in Montreal! We stocked my fridge with fresh fruits, baguettes, cheeses and calabresa (a thin cut of spicy salami). I'm not used to buying groceries that aren't on special at the store, which is why I usually end up with older produce and green peppers instead of red ones. But these things cease to matter whenever my parents come to town. These photos were taken outside Mile End Fruiterie - which presently has the best Golden Delicious apples in the city - run Mile Enders! Grab them apples while they're hot.

Some neighborhood personalities saw my mom taking pictures outside the fruiterie and asked to be in them too. I love turning the camera on people who want to be captured :)

Today I went swimming for the first time in a year, and it has cured my most basic woes. The chlorine did wonders for my kitchen hands, i quickly washed my hair afterwards and relaxed in the steam room, and although I'm not the most impressive swimmer, floating through the water truly helped to clear my head. I also spent the morning redecorating my place due to a fruit fly outbreak in my apartment. The presence of these little buggers make me feel gross, and so, the mindless creatures motivated me to move my garbage can and recycling bin under the sink clearing up a bunch of space for cutesy things and cottage style decorating.

Today I'm listening to pop music, wearing all white and prancing around my apartment. I was gonna go for a quick workout today but then I watched this TED talk about slowing down and it inspired me to just lounge around instead. Sometimes doing nothing is the best thing.

I've had this plant for two and a half years! This is an unbelievable fact, as I'm very neglectful when it comes to homey things like plants. But it won't die! I've gone weeks without watering it and I swear it gets greener. Below it, I've "curated" a few of my favorite images in an old window frame. Its filled with 2 postcards - one of which came with my "Thunder in Our Hearts" tote bag) Below is a photo of my mom taken by my brother Michael Morris and at the very bottom is an image that I got from a poster for The Void Magazine at school taken by Yuli Sato.

Because of your nice comments welcoming me back, I thought it would be nice to show you where I've been! I mentioned a little while ago that I got a job as a line cook at Pizzeria Magpie and since then my life has changed in so many ways. For instance, looking stylish is near impossible most of the time. I've traded painted nails for burnt, scabbed kitchen hands. High heels for ten dollar Pro Keds. And since my shifts go way past midnight, I find myself at every party or bar in my work clothes still, which I hate but am getting used to.

And I've been learning so much about myself through the kitchen. At university, I was in my comfort zone all the time, and now I'm constantly pushing my boundaries further, and its uncomfortable and exhausting but great too. And I'll never see busy restaurants the same way again. I'm obsessed with them. I peer into every window and try and get a look at the cooks, the dishwasher, the servers, the people eating, what their eating - its a fascinating show.

Grace Under Fire

The last few weeks, have been stressful to say the least, and I've been the furthest thing from grace under fire. Yesterday was just too much I was a sensitive sally all day. A low point: sitting on a wet park bench eating a bag of french fries, waiting for the bus to take me to school with my paper and zine only half done, and crying. Another: standing in front of a photocopier trying to figure out how to print my zine double sided and asking the machine, "Why?" Also crying. Or when I realized I had french fry grease all over my paper and well, I didn't cry that time but it was a close call.

But there have been moments when I've been able to step out of the grind and just enjoy. Like the pictures above where I ran into my friend Adey on the first day of the Vintage Pop Sale (its still on till the 9th). I got the straw purse at the pop sale, and everything else I'm wearing was thrifted in Montreal. I have one six page to write and hand in on thursday but after everything, it will be a breeze. And then I'm done school! Forever! And it will be summer. Four months that I plan to spend relaxing. Stress? What's that? Sangrias on the patio? Oh yes, yes, this I can comprehend.

This Magic Moment

Spring has sprung! The weather has been glorious in Montreal. To celebrate, my new detachable collar is making its debut. It was a gift from Izzy for modeling her etsy shop. I absolutely love it!! Such a simple piece and yet it consistently adds life to many of my boring old clothes. I've been wearing this shirt almost everyday. It takes real effort for me to reach for anything else in my wardrobe. It was also a gift from the Citizen Vintage ladies for etsy shop modeling. Ah, the fruits of my labor, and how well the two go together! The skirt I got from a clothing swap in le Mile End. Yay free outfits!

I go to Nicole's blog every day because a) she wears the most creative and amazing vintage outfits and b) she has a fucking good time in them! I mentioned in this post that I was on the radio for my friends show, The Tuesday Morning After. I did an 8 minute stint on winter fashion in Montreal and was pleased to have the studio laughing! To listen, click here and let the media player load - i'm speaking slightly after the halfway mark! Excuse the first minute or so, I was SO nervous my heart was pounding out of my chest! But after that, I got cozy and started to have fun with it :)

Speaking of radio, this is a video I saw filmed at the KEXP radio station in Seattle that launched my love for Florence and the machine. KEXP also got me on to The Tallest Man on Earth.

Nightlife Magazine is a free mag that comes out once a week covering cultural type events in the city. It's got a street style section, and Hannah was featured this week! Which means Hannah was here!! And from what I can make out, I think this picture was snapped in my neighborhood. This excites me!

Today I ran after a lovely girl to ask her where her tights came from and after a few second she was like "Wait, do you have a website?" We bonded. We laughed. We cried. No, but seriously, that was a great moment and it made my day :) I just wish I wasn't such a shit when it comes to names. Could you comment and tell me it again??

Stayed Up All Night Listening To The Radio

Oh but tomorrow Citizen Vintage opens its doors for the first time from the 10th to the 16th and I'm seriously looking forward to it. Along with hitting up the vintage shops, I plan to use the rest of February to catch up on the school work I've horribly neglected and get out to the gym - there is no excuse, the Y is half a block away from me.

Love her or hate her (I personally love her) Dita Von Teese is so immaculate and polished its almost scary. But what does Dita do? As a girl, everyone called her by her given name, Heather Sweet. But by 15, Von Teese was drawn to a less than sweet aesthetic! She loved lacy lingerie, erotic dance, the pin up style, corsets, old hollywood...she started dancing in a strip club when she was 18 and played with the space to create playful and elaborate vintage dance routines. The burlesque came later in 1992, along with fetish and glamour modeling, costume design and acting. She is not the first woman to evoke the vintage burlesque visual, but she's certainly the most visible - Americas Next Top Model anyone? And she's got the best room of hats I ever did see.

Pizza and Sexy Girls

I'm now a working woman! I got a job making appetizers at a lovely pizzeria in the Mile End called Magpie. It's really my kind of place. If someone took me on a date there, I'd totally go to first base with them. So I'm trying really hard to be a good worker and be myself at the same time. The training period has been difficult and its taken all my energy to adjust to the hours (no time for blogging!) but such is life.

Onto sexy girls! These images are from Lickety Split, a sex positive smut zine that cumz out of Montreal (I mentioned it here too) The shoot above is from "The Work Issue" and took place in the editors home with some sexxxy pals I've met through the publication.

So what is this awesome zine? Well! Its for perverts and soccer moms, drag queens and artists, homos and homo cops..anyone who gets a kick out of content that's diverse, creative, artistic, political, thought provoking and saucy! The Work Issue is really fun. And I'm in it! Though you'll have to pick up the zine on etsy to see for yo'self.

I'm just so lucky to have Sofia in my life. She makes the best mix tapes i've ever recieved and truly cares about my iron deficiency. And jeez, whatta babe, are you melting yet? Theres a lovely picture of Sofia floating around the internet, going crazy viral, possibly due to its presence on calivintage and the fact that it was taken by the lovely Yuli Sato. Czech it.

What can I say? Together we make two peas in a very red pod.

All of these photos are taken by the magnificent Daryl Banks. The title in a reference to a Pavement song that I listened to over and over when I cut my hair super short and regretted it about two weeks later.

I am so excited to present to you Citizen Vintage! Brooke, Becky and Lara are opening a vintage shop in Montreal and they asked me model some of their spring collection - you can check out their pretty tumblr for a bunch of pictures from the shoot. I studied theater in university, and i've always thought of it as the most collaborative art one can practice. But when I was in their new showroom, I realized fashion is maybe even more so. And being in the hands of such capable, talented women, I felt I was in the midst of a total dream team.

A Purrrfect Set

I developed my first roll of film on the Diana Mini today! I was told Diana's are finicky and unreliable, so I shot this roll carelessly, expecting one or two of the pictures to turn out. But to my surprise, almost every photo turned out, and I actually like a lot them! Mazel Tov Diani Mini, you're a woman now...a little older and a little wiser, but I will always see you as my little girl. (Time for the loony bin and by that I mean bed!)

Izzy from YeYe! took these shots while I was goofing around posing for her etsy shop (some of the pics are up already!) Hanging out with Izzy was heaven! A kind of place where organic banana's, fascinating chats and vintage dresses rule the world! She really is incredible, one of the most inspired (and inspiring!) people I've ever been around. And the clothes. My god the clothes! She's an amazing stylist and a true collector and creator of vintage goodies. My friend Sofia lives in Toronto with three amazing cats and one amazing photographer named Daryl Banks. One day over dinner she said to me "I want to arrange a shoot for you with Daryl. As a present!" We set the date for December 18th - which I decided was also going to be my second birthday, Toronto Stylez. The shoot took place at night, and the day was spent shopping for a dress to wear to said shoot, getting my eyebrows done and eating dinner with my family at my favorite restaurant Rodneys Oyster bar.

These pictures are very special for me. I want to keep them forever and pass them down my future child, who will pass them down to her future child who will pass them down to their child who will say "Thats my great-bubby when she turned 21 for the second time."

I’m never that intense about sticking to my resolutions but I’ve always used the turning of a new year to reflect on the last twelve months and start envisioning and dreaming for the coming dozen. This year I'm thinking vintage and bringing more of it into my life. Cause with every little bit I collect, I find a little more of myself (d’aaaw) and I hope you’ll slowly but surely start to see this evolution on my blog too. If I was going to make a legit resolution out of this, it would be a challenge to myself – only buy vintage for the next year.

How was your new years eve btw? Equipped with a bottle of champagne and a fancy hat on my hairs, I took to the streets of Toronto with my closest friends from grade 12, who I've been lucky to spend every new years with since. These pictures were taken in a cafe, which we had full reign of for the night (belongs to a friends mom) then off to a bar in Kensington Market (where I got my little black dress) and later, a party!

Its the last day of 2010 and I just got my 100th follower. Thank you so much! I see it as a sign for fashion made me funky and my coming year on the inter-webs! I'll be sharing my New Years Resolutions in my next post - and I promise, they have nothing to do with weight loss!

This dress was recently purchased from Flashback, a vintage store in Toronto's Kensington Market. It was $33 - the most I've ever spent on a vintage dress! But I love it to bits because its simple and timeless and was made in Montreal (along with the hat I'm wearing, which I got fifty percent off at Goodwill). Thigh high tights are H&M and the shoes are originally Nine West but purchased second hand.

I love this pin because I have three cats in Toronto, and its like they've jumped onto my jacket. I'm wearing all vintage today except for the tights which I found at H&M for two bucks. The coat was snatched from a garage sale in the summer for five dollars and the hat I got for pennies at a Goodwill warehouse in Toronto called Buy the Pound.

My brother works at a photography store in Toronto, and he surprised me with a Diana Mini last night - purchased half off with a staff discount! It takes pretty pictures. It matches my eyes. Color My World

Directed by Tom Ford, the fashion designer who turned around the house of Gucci, A Single Man is so beautiful and gripping, I felt a small loss every time the frame changed. The story follows George (Colin Firth) on the day he decides to kill himself. His life is grey and directionless and routine, but on this day he think is his last, George is touched by small moments and memories that make his world, if only for a slippery moment, vibrant and glorious.

In my creative writing classes at Concordia, we write stories and plays and almost always come back to the same question: What's going to change in this characters established life? Why tell the story on this particular day? When George wakes up from a horrible recurring dream and says that this day, he'd decided, was going to be different, I was completely and utterly hooked! Best movie ever.

Glass at the City of Craft

There seems to be a pattern where I go to craft shows hungover and leave feeling refreshed and excited. Although I'm used to craft and zine fairs in Montreal, City of Craft in Toronto was no less incredible! I was told by Claire from Needle Book that city of craft is super choosy about who gets to table - so every single display blew me away.

I got this bowl from the incredibly talented glass artist Patrick Fisher. The milky seafoam color and the simple shape are mesmerizing, like staring into the ocean. I also really loved the glass china jewelry by Amy Belanger and of course, the Pin Pals were there - these girls are everywhere and have the sweetest, craftiest and most affordable goodies at every craft fair I frequent.

I'm not very experimental when it comes to my hair. I'm too wimpy to get bangs so I pin my hair up instead. But lately i've been experimenting with back combing my hair to give it the classic bridget bardot poof. The hairspray is probably killing my red hairs stand by strand but a 'sex kitten' i do feel! I'm hoping to get to the hairdressers sometime this week so that my hair lends itself a little easier to sixties styling.

One of my favorite things about coming home for the holidays is rifling through every closet in my house and finding awesome clothes I forgot I had or never knew I had! The plaid skirt, red tights and fur jacket were all pulled enthusiastically from the depths of my closet. I'm pretty excited about these shots, its the first time i've taken a tripod and fancy schmancy outfit to an outside spot. in this case, the ravine down the street.

The collage work was done by Tara Sinn, an artist based in New York specializing in collage, animation and website design...inspiring as I'll be spending the rest of this blistering afternoon reading up on website design turtorials. If any of you are in Toronto, look up this event thrown by a group called Good Kids at club neutral in kensington market. Smart Design

This morning I went out for breakfast and then dropped by Smart Design, a spacious craft and design fair, with a lot of stunning vintage for sale. I feel both at home and incredibly excited in these kinds of spacesI My favorite part about today was running into other bloggers and vintage craft vixens in Montreal who have come to know me through this blog.

I stopped by Lara's table to say hi and tried on a scarf I'd seen on her etsy shop Lalouka.

Near the end of my visit I said hello to Sam from the Pin Pals. I met her at Puces Pop and it was really nice that she recognized me :) I'm finding more and more that the crafty girls in Montreal are incredibly warm and supportive.

Possibly my favorite run in of the day was seeing Izzy from La Vie C'est Yeye. We've been into each others blogs for a few months and met for the first time today - our eyes lit up when we saw one another!

OH and I tried a red velvet cupcake for the first time...its made with beets, chocolate, vanilla and magic.

Close, Very Close

My week has been spent in my bed, eating copious amounts of sunflower seeds while writing papers and preparing for presentations. I haven't even gotten a chance to wash my hair! When not tying it up in a bun of shame, I can mold it anyway my heart desires. Points!

But on Wednesday I did tear myself away from my sunflower seeds and bedside heater long enough to buy a long sleeve body suit at American Apparel (they were having a 30% off sale for Concordia students, so what the heck). Despite my distaste for the company (mainly that the staff make me uncomfortable and I always feel like they think I'm on the brink of stealing something!) there is one piece in my wardrobe that I go to again and again and its my American Apparel short sleeved leotard. I've gone through 3 in the past four years...So you know, I'm not calling for a boycott.

You Me and Dupuis

My heart skipped a beat when I found this coat for 29 dollars at a second hand store...when I brought it home I researched the tag on the inside. Turns out I'm wearing a little piece of Montreal history.

The Dupuis Freres opened as a small family run clothing store in 1870. It quickly grew into one of Canadas largest department stores, with the help of a branding strategy that appealed to Francophones in Canada and due to the growth of their mail order catalogues - in the 1930's the Dupuis Freres recieved up to 10, 000 catalogue orders a day. The company closed in 1978 due to bankruptcy and company strikes.

It makes me wonder how old my coat is, and who wore it! My dad told me that my Bubbie wore a coat just like this when she was younger. It makes me feel very close to her whenever I put it on! I was sitting on the bus and an old lady was studying my coat carefully...and then she smiled, all lost in thought. She could have been thinking about her grocery list, but I'd like to think the coat brought her back to a happy time :) I guess we will never know!

1. my first kiss happened in las vegas, of all places! I was sixteen, on a bus teen tour across the states and wonderwall was playing in the background. our teeth clanked relentlessly!

2. i’m graduating university in may with a minor is gender studies and a major in creative writing.

3. career ambition: to take Jeanne Bekers job from under her and be a writer/blogger till the end of my days!

4. fond childhood memory: my parents wouldn't buy me an easy bake oven when I was little. one morning, after desperately crying and begging for one, my dad decided to take me out for a professional bread maker instead.

5. some simple goals for the next year are to: bring that bread maker out of the garage and use it (!) get a video camera, learn to shoot manual, apply for an internship at WORN, learn the Harmonica and continue building up my blog!

6. at least once a week, i have dreams that I'm buffy and have to save the world. its fucked up!

7. i'm beginning to realize that i love vintage clothing possibly more than anything in the world.

We need a new magazine for girls…

BECAUSE it’s time to show that feminism, fashion and girlhood can exist together and be representative of our lives and the change we want to see in the world.

BECAUSE being political and critical can be fun and silly and sexy and powerful when we do it OUR way.

BECAUSE we want FASHION not trends.

BECAUSE we’re sick of magazines that perpetuate beauty ideals that are impossible and damaging to our self esteem.

BECAUSE we hate being told how to flirt, how to make our lips kissable and how to read his body language when some of us girls love other girls, and for the girls who like guys - we’re smarter than that.

BECAUSE if we’re going to apply lipstick and play with style, it’s gonna be for OURSELVES as a fun and creative outlet for personal expression.

BECAUSE we need a magazine that represents girls of color, women of different sizes and abilities and queer ladies, to help demonstrate that you don’t have to be white, straight, able bodied and thin to be represented in a magazine.

BECAUSE we want to challenge and play with the fashion industry and expose the social, historical, economic and political forces behind the industry.

BECAUSE its cool if we want to have sex and its cool if we don't. Our bodies are our own and no one has the authority to make decisions about our bodies but ourselves.

BECAUSE we are sick of magazines that are constantly trying to sell us things.

BECAUSE we are sick and tired of hearing the statement: “The number one goal of girls is to lose weight” when we know a lot of girls with bigger dreams than that.

BECAUSE these dishonest messages about ourselves are not going to change unless we create our OWN meanings in a magazine that reflects our lives and choices.

Sassy Magazine: Fighting the Big Bad

We may not have demons and vampires (I wish!) but there is a force of darkness, a big bad - magazines that tell us we aren't and never will be enough. I would like to see this message staked in my time, and I want it to reach girls most of all. Since hearing about Tavi and Jane's magazine on The Style Rookie, I've been thinking a lot about my girlhood. I was 16 in the picture above, spending the summer at a youth leadership camp in British Columbia. It was the summer before I switched to alternative school for grade 12, the summer I started seeking messages of resistance outside my little suburban life.

Hmm I'm beginning to sound like Baby in the beginning of Dirty Dancing when she's all, "That was the summer we went to Kellermans. When everyone called me Baby and it didn't occur to me to mind". But regardless, my world was starting to open up! Here's a collage of the major things that ignited my passion for seeking empowered girlhood heroines, movements and ideas.

At this years zine festival in Montreal, I tabled for Lickety Split, a sex positive smut zine that I'm involved in. We were placed beside WORN Fashion Journal and I got the chance to check out the new issue (which is AMAZING!), make some friends, chat with old ones and people watch everyone packed into the basement of a church, wide eyed, overwhelmed and buzzing at all the amazing zines and artwork on display.

Poutine and Polka Dots

I'm in a food coma today after yesterday but it was worth it!! It all began when a girl at school noticed me ogling her box of gourmet cupcakes and offered me one! I ate it on the way to Moe's Diner, a downtown greasy spoon from heaven, where I met my friend Becky and knocked back the best plate of poutine I've ever had in Montreal. My junk food fair ended at Fats Billiard, the sleaziest bar known to student, where we polished off a couple buckets of free popcorn and one (or was it three?) pitchers of beer.

Good Eats in Montreal

If you ever find yourself hungry in Montreal's Mile End, I would highly recommend Milani, a small Vietnamese restaurant that serves the most delicious soup I have ever tasted to date! (Another specialty would be their subs to-go for three dollars). Today was a perfectly indulgent day spent thrift shopping, enjoying the beautiful weather, eating soup with Scarlett, and admittedly, starting, but failing to finish Sex and the City 2. That movie is racist!

Tonight I'm excited to curl up on the couch and drink tea with some pastries (Rugelach, my favorite!) I didn't want to spend money on a costume this year, so I decided to look for one within my closet. A Sandy-when-she-goes-bad outfit quickly emerged out of my clothes. Wearing all vintage...I shortened the skirt last night while watching sex and the city and made the bow out of the extra fabric (I used THIS tutorial on YouTube.) Its not perfect but I find it charming and better that way.

How to be Alone

I am going to try and make Tuesday my personal date day! I love doing things on my own and find I'm recharged after a day of meandering around all by myself! Here's a video I LOVE about being happy doing things on your own.

The weather was perfect today so I tried out a cozy sandwich shop in Little Italy called Le Pick Up, which came to me highly recommended. The space reminded me of a small town corner store...its woodsy and small and the the regulars are friendly. Bob Dylan was playing and it fit the vibe perfectly.

I got a little lost on the way so I asked a hip looking girl if she knew where it was. She couldn't explain all the twists and turns, so she pulled out her Iphone, said "I really want you to try the Halloumi sandwich" and looked up the address. It was worth it... Grilled cheese, decadent minty cabbage perfection!

Le Pick Up is half restaurant, half Deppaneur (they are all over Montreal, basically a convenient store only it sells alcohol till 11 every night).

Then I went to two second hand shops and spent hours wondering if my purchases were practical! lol.

Hard Headed Woman

Sadly not all of us can look this fabulous on a bicycle!

There has been a lot of rain in Montreal this fall season and it seems to always come down the hardest when I'm on my bike!

Equipped with my new raincoat and hardy blundestones, I am ready to grab this fall season by the balls! Both keep me dry, comfortable and temperate.

Yesterday I spent some time in the hospital, visiting a friend who hit his head. (He is okay - thank god!) On my ride over, I vowed to always wear helmut before hopping on my bike. Its so silly not to!

So far the helmut-jacket-blundstone combo has been successful - no one recognizes me anymore and I feel free to sing as loud as my heart desires! Currently stuck in my head is a new song called Cider by my friends Walter and Irene (their myspace HERE)

Kensey Crane

Kensey Crane is an artist whose photos capture love in most unexpected places! Her pictures are sincere, and charming, and each one strikes a cord in me - the one that sings "that's it...that is the feeling." Nostalgia, longing, humor, magic...it's all there. In our interview, Kensey explains that everything Miranda July touches turns to gold - well, I would argue the exact same thing about the lovely Miss Crane.

We did a fun little interview and together chose five pictures from the hundreds of gorgeous photos on her Flickr. It was not easy, let me tell you!

Ha! Thank you!! It was a magnetic feeling I had towards the camera, an instant affinity. I reached for it to communicate all these ideas I had in my head. I remember reading an interview with Joanna Newsom where she says her harp is like an extension of herself, and those are my exact sentiments towards my camera. I feel like something is missing when I don’t have my camera with me. Like I’ve forgotten to bring one of my limbs! There is nothing more painful for me than seeing the perfect candid moment and being caught cameraless!

My dad is a photographer, and was always really encouraging about the whole thing. When I showed the smallest spark of interest in it - he ran out and bought me my first camera, gave me some really helpful hints and got excited whenever I showed him a photo I’d taken.

Flickr can be really hit or miss for me. I feel like I’ve found so many amazing treasures on there, but you’ve really got to sift away the people who just want to show off their fancy cameras, trying to promote themselves without ever appreciating what other people have to offer. I joined it about three years ago and I feel like I’ve made some real connections with other members, often other women, which is really nice. It’s such a lovely and simple form of human connection. Sharing images. It often keeps me motivated when I receive a positive reaction. Sometimes I can’t even wait to put something up that I’m proud of!

People with interesting faces! I love anything that is outside “the box” - I guess quirkiness in the most sincere form. People who are weird without trying to be so, or people who embrace whatever it is that sets them apart from the norm! I really love Miranda July, everything she touches turns to gold. I get really inspired by her work because it is all saturated in such humor and sincerity and those are the two most important qualities I seek out in people. I also love old films and photos and paintings that pushed the boundaries of what was considered acceptable at the time and spend a lot of time reading, watching movies, googling strange things, and observing people in various situations and somehow it all soaks in to my subconscious and makes it easier for me create my own things. I love people who make art as a means to express themselves and provoke thought or emotion, not just for fame or recognition or flattery.

I am just so charmed by certain aesthetics and colour schemes and shapes that don’t seem to exist in the modern day. Finding something unique and vintage with a history you’ll never even know about, it’s a thrill for me! Not to mention is almost always affordable which is a comfort for someone who is perpetually on a budget

Hmm.. I think I’d be a spoonful of Nutella. Because then I’d shamefully eat myself once I thought everyone else had gone to bed.

In August, Isabel joked about "going goth" on her blog, and with that, the darker aesthetic flew into my radar. Then last week, I found myself completely enamored by three collages created by Raez of Cheap Thrills on the LG Fashion Voice website (to see the rest click HERE), (Psst! Both of these girls are Canadian!) After gazing at the collages for a very long time, I realized that I had many similar items lying around my house.

I usually wear this jacket as a dress - though it hardly gets any wear because it's super 80's. But worn as a coat I feel like I'm in a warped fashion matrix. The corset was purchased two summers ago at Value Village, the maroon lace tights are from the Bay and the boots are from VV as well.

The funnest part was scrounging for accessories and makeup! The maroon lipstick is from MAC and starts with the word "DARK". I'm afraid the rest of the name has been rubbed off! Maybe its like "Dark Night"? On my nails: OPI's Lincoln Parc After Dark, the neclace is just a gold chain I had lying around and its secured with a twist tie.

This picture is funny - I found this black netted thing on my floor after spilling the bag of leaves out. I can wear this on my face I thought! Then I felt too much like lady gaga and took it off.

This was really fun. I have to say, its seriously empowering to be able to craft an entirely new look without having to spend any money! So empowering, I just want to throw leaves everywhere and trash my apartment! Oh wait...I already did that.

Crazy Hair Day

I've been living in this sweater for the past few days, so I decided to base an outfit around it...I threw on a pair of knee socks and heels but I couldn't bring myself to put on makeup or pin my hair.

Its Canadian thanksgiving so I've got a four day weekend! I'm having a decidedly low key (read: lazy) couple of days - I'm staying in at night, going to the gym, reading, and spending some much needed time by myself.

So far I haven't touched the readings I should be doing for school...I've been too "busy" devouring Tavi Gevinson's profile in the New Yorker, catching up on episodes of gossip girl, blogging...OH! and watching this hialrious video of Karla from Karlas Closet - back when she was in a girl group called The Slumber Party Girlz. (She's in the striped shirt!)

On more than a few occasions, people have told me, "I can't tell if I'm actually funny, or if you're just a good audience".

I laugh a lot. Sometimes its the humor of life that gets me, or that spark I love to see in other people, but more often than not, I'm laughing at myself. At my dinner party not long ago, I mixed my actual beer up with the beer we were ashing our cigarettes in. My favorite pictures from the night are the ones taken with Erika (her blog here) directly after I spit a mouthful of cigarette into the sink!

I used to be more aware of the excitable part of my personality. (Like: "Okay! You're at a 15 right now. Maybe try bringing it down to a 6.") But I'm beginning to realize that its all a part of who I am, and if given the choice, I will always enter laughing :)

On Sunday I went to a craft fair called Puces Pop and I stumbled upon a table that was strangely familiar - the quirky art work, the stitching on the buttons...After a moments lingering, I asked, "Were you profiled in WORN Fashion Journal?"

It turned out to be true! And coincidentally, my friend Tessa Smith covered the story.

The lovely lady behind the table has the best name in the world - Sam Purdy. (Am I Right??) She also works with Sara Guindon, who I didn't get to meet, but also has a pretty sweet name. Together they produce beautiful crafts under the title, Pin Pals (here is their blog) Speaking of pins, I have an unnecessary amount of bobby pins in my hair in the picture below! haha

I bought this pin of two red heads - one happy and one sad and I've been wearing it every day since! When people ask me how I'm doing, I think I should start pointing to one or the other, depending on my mood.

How Did Stella Get Her Groove Back?

This is the outfit that carried me through the weekend. It reminds me of Sailor Moon, an airplane stewardess, and a kindergarten color board (see? primary colors are complimentary!) I found the top at Concordia's clothing swap this week, at a community event called The Really Really Free Market.

I don't know how Stella got her groove back, but I know that I found mine this weekend. Its probably a combination of the leaves falling, the POP events happening in my neighborhood, and the non stop fun I have been having since Wednesday night! Maybe that's all I needed - a really carefree weekend to settle into this city.

I had a little party last night and this is how the end looked - Me and four little babes in a blanket, a pile of kittens, all snug in a rug. I think we were all exhausted! I am ready to spend the next week in a mute, anti-social state of reflection! I also have many more pictures from this weekend to sift through, and a disposable camera currently developing at the Pharma-Prix, so check back for more throughout the week :)

All the City's A Stage

All the city's a stage, and all the boys and girls are merely POP-ing.

If you already know what POP Montreal is, you get a POPsicle. In case you don't, here is my explanation: For five days music venues all over the city come alive, showcasing wicked local acts (like Charlotte), small but mighty independent bands, big showstoppers, and a whole slew of fun events revolving around fashion, film, crafty joys and alas, parties. I'm especially excited for tomorrow which seems to be a combination of all of these things!

Puces Pop Craft Fair is on Saturday and Sunday from 11 - 6 pm in the church basement on St Urbain and St. Viateur.

The Silly Kissers show at Phonoplis is on Parc between Fairmount and St Viateur. Show start at 2 and goes till about 4.

Forest City Lovers are playing at Divan Orange. I don't know what time they are playing because the POP Montreal website is very confusing!

It being POP Montreal, I want to tell you about Charlotte Cornfield, one of my favorite musicians in the city.

I imagine walking down Bright Street in Toronto, feeling restless and drunk and unsettled, because there is someone out there who is on my mind, and that someone makes me feel both heartbroken and hopeful at the same time.

There is a neat article about Charlotte from Found in the Margins where she explains "I recently wrote my first song that was a narrative--like, a story from beginning to end, but I think the most important thing about reading is the exposure to words and what can be done with them. Good stories with good characters are a powerful form [of communication], especially when people can relate to them. It's the same way in songs, particularly in autobiographical song writing." Each of Charlottes songs have the power to grip and hold me with one word, or one melody. Especially Arc Blues.

She is also a dear friend of mine, and having had the chance to get to know her better throughout the past...five years, I have had the pleasure to witness her talent, humor, self reliance and kindness! Charlotte's music fosters the kind of community that POP Montreal is all about, and she is always playing shows around Montreal and the rest of Canada! So check out her myspace for dates!

Tonight (Thursday) Charlotte is playing a free show in the basement of Phonoplis record store on Parc and Fairmount from 5pm-8pm with Shotgun Jimmie, Dog Day and and Baby Eagle. I want my blog to be about fashion (real fashion, not just Jenny fashion) but I think its boring and isolating to post photo after photo of beautiful gaunt models on the catwalk or in a fashion spread. This is fashion made me funky, not fashion made them funky haha.

So, lets begin with my spin on Kate Sylvestors collection from this past spring.

. How sweet is the music? And the collection! I'm going to my first fashion show tomorrow night, affiliated with Pop Montreal. If you are in Montreal COME, We will have a time and a half.

The bow on my neck was made out on a thin cotton twin bed-sheet. I used a generous amount of fabric - about the length of my body to my neck, and almost as wide as me. My makeup is pinker and softer than normal. I used Rimmel "In Vogue" lipstick on my lips and cheeks. Damn I forgot to wear mascara. Next time.

I kept the tag on because I plan to return these pants. They were 67 dollars from Zara and I feel like I will stumble upon a similar color of trousers at a thrift store - or at least I will try! The pants came with the belt, which I folded the way Kate does (were on a first name basis now). Then I attached a gold chain I had lying around with elastic bands. And socks and sandals to complete the look!

Burlesquecapades

Today I wore my first lady/pin up skirt to a burlsque drawing class.

I found it this weekend at the Vintage POP showcase in the discount bin (five dollars!)

If you can believe it, I went to the drawing class for my first assignment in school. Its for my sexuality and cinema class, where my professor had us go out on the town and do an analysis of a sexy place or event happening in the city. Instead of going to a strip club like everyone else in my class, my friend and I decided to draw Bonbon Bombay, the winner of last years Montreal International Burlesque Festival.

She came out in three elaborate costumes, striking poses and daintily undressing while the crowd drew away. I especially loved drawing her first costume, which she is wearing (and taking off) in the video above!

The Dateless Wonder

One of the things I love about the blogger Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere is that she always seems so polished and together. Organized. Never a hair out of place, its as if she rolls out of bed with a new shade of lipstick on and designer heels strapped to her feet. I love going to her blog because it feels like dropping in on some sort of fantasy life where I can think "my life will be like that one day".

Its 4:30 pm on Friday and I am still wearing my pajamas and drinking a bottle of pop that has gone flat from sitting out all night. I am so not that girl. And I'm trying to be okay with that.

I'm thinking about this now in particular because I am newly single, and many of my favorite bloggers have boyfriends (a "guy behind the camera".) Often these boyfriends go unnamed, are wickedly attractive, and work in some form of media entertainment (MTV, Band, Professional Photographer). Though I'm a hopeless romantic, and think love is a most wonderful thing, I'm also learning now that my self worth should not and cannot be based on whether or not someone wants to be with me. Perhaps one day, I will have a wickedly attractive musician photographer art media guru boyfriend who takes beautiful pictures of my polished bad ass self, but until then, I'm just gonna do my thing and take pictures on my makeshift tripod. All the single girls are doing it.

My mom says I'm going to be okay, I "just need to take a shower." haha!

Connected

I've been without internet for three weeks and have felt very unconnected to the world at large! It helped to have this blog going, though my posts were either made at the library (SHHHHHH) at a cafe ($$$$) or on Concordia's wifi (made my bag so HEAVY).

Now that I can connect from the comfort of my couch, I don't know what to do first...watch the pilot of the highly anticipated Boardwalk Empire, begin the fourth season of Mad Men, figure out the schedule for the POP Montreal music festival, or skype my mom!!!!!

Wore this outfit to a party and later a dancy thing on Friday night. My friend very sweetly gave me this sweater and it is just right for Autumn in Montreal. Worn with a floral skirt my friend Jenni lent me, a black American Apparel body suit, Value Village leather belt, and Pierre Hardy for GAP platforms. (Seeing them on Tavi Gevinson in her latest post sent a shiver down my very spine) You see, the Internet really does connect me to it all.

Comfort in Stripes

I have recently come to understand the mass appeal of stripes.

So simple and stylish! So casual yet chic!

I had never sought out stripes in the past, and I still won't spend a lot of money on the style - I'm talking about you 35 dollar striped crop top from American Apparel - but this shirt landed in my hands and begged to be worn everyday! Becomming stripe-er was a chance occurrence, really. I pulled a top out of a bin at Buy the Pound in Toronto, and probably paid about 50 cents for it.

The awkward but cozy thing, is that a lot of other people are wearing stripes, and I find myself matching with at least one of my friends everyday.
The other day Mat and I were like awkward kiddies on twin day - both wearing thick cream sweaters, navy and white stripes with a tan leather belt, trouser pants and pointy ass kicking boots. It was kind of awesome and weird, and I swear not planned!

In N' Out Of My Head

I am sitting in the university cafe and they are playing Hot Chip WAY too loud! Not the best atmosphere to report my lost credit card! (I failed the security test.) I'm conflicted because it could be safely tucked away in my trench coat pocket at home, OR it could be in the hands of a dirty thief! What's a girl to do?

High waisted pants from American Apparel, Purple sheer shirt from Goodwill (originally from Old Navy) and I found the orange cardigan in a give away box on the street earlier this month. I think bright orange is a perfect color for fall, and I've been wearing it every day this week!

Glam Pop

On Friday, I went out to see Dirty Beaches and ended up crushing seriously hard on the tunes of Jef Barbara.

Fun fact: this video was shot at La Brique, where I danced the night away on Friday! We danced in a circle around Jef, and at one point my friend looked at me and said something like "Hold on to these moments, they will soon be our greatest memories" :) I thought in that moment it was very true.

I wore these pants that I got from a little second hand store in the suburbs. I probably tried on about 30 pairs of pants that day. 29 looked hideous on me but then I threw on these pants and felt attractive again. They are worn high with a Value Village leather belt. The shirt is one of the oldest pieces in my wardrobe, bought at Abercrombie and Fitch on a family trip to the states. RACY for age 12! Velvet heels are from Salvation Army.

This has been a killer weekend! I'm paying for it today, with a lazy hangover and general feeling of uselessness. Have a good week!

Election Fraud

I have never been one to watch a lot of TV. Until this summer, where Buffy the Vampire Slayer kept me company. Where an episode (or two or three) of How I Met Your Mother helped me to fall asleep at night. I even experimented with a Sabrina the Teenage Witch kick (It didn't last). But I don't need television to numb my thoughts anymore! I want to be inspired! And there is one show that still fulfills this need for me.

Mad Men!!! Plus, Donald Draper is a SEXY DREAMBOAT BABE.
I was truly hooked right after watching a video that Sally Jane Vintage posted, of Mad Men stylist and designer Janie Bryant taking us through the wardrobe for Season Four. The video has since been removed due to copyright (I would have loved to post it here!) but if you are interested in the show, and love vintage threads, I highly recommend hopping over to this link to watch it!

Banana Republic has teamed up with Mad Men for a casting call, giving fans an opportunity to appear on the show as an extra. I'm rooting for Hannah from Aesthetic Feast, a fellow Canadian blogger, with soem dashing photographs! She had 6,000 votes when I first saw the photo a few weeks ago. Summer Forever

I'm at the library in Mile End now, its my seventh day without internet and I've already finished the third season of Mad Men I downloaded! EEEk. Its the first day of school for me (I've got Gender and Journalism tonight at six) and I feel so ambivalent about it! Up until last year, I was always excited for my first day - I would have a giddy sleep the night before school, my hair would be washed, and maybe an outfit picked out. It just feels different this year perhaps b'cause it's my last year of university and you know, a well rounded year to me looks like blogging and having pals over for australian pies, throwing in some courses for good measure.

I'm also reflecting on the summer which had its ups and downs, but mostly, I can't believe its over! But the good thing is that in the past the beginning of school also signified the beginning of stress. I want this year to be different. Summer ForEVER!
At the cottage, wearing a tank from Buy The Pound or a purple polka dot shirt from Old Navy (bought second hand) and shorts from Target (bathing suit section). Hayley is wearing a knit cardigan from Buy the Pound and a skirt worn as a dress from Fripe Prix in Montreal. Nars Heat Wave lippy on the both of us!

Expand with Spandex

I recently had a thought about spandex shorts. In high school they intimidated me because the best volleyball players wore them on the team. The weakest links (me) wore sweats. But I saw a post on Fashion Scrapbook, where the blogger was wearing "cycling shorts" under a flowy short dress and I thought it looked really classy. Another blogger I really like Cupcakes and Cashmere is vibing on leather shorts, which I love! But I feel like it will be a while until I find some that fit and am also unsure about the fabric since I like my shorts to BREATH! Enter spandex.

Wearing Buy the Pound striped top, thrifted bow belt, Value Village shorts, vintage shoes and a little lady harmonica necklace.

Bitchin Kitchen: Seafoam Edition

The day has come my friends! I have finally found an apartment to live in. The whole shelter thang has had me so freaked out and I am relieved to have it behind me. The very manic "But without shelter how will I live!?" part of my brain has turned off and gone vacation. Now a new, more inspired part of my brain is buzzing: home inspiration! First stop: The kitchen.
