I Think I Need A New Heart

Saturday, July 14, 2012

I'm going into the 5th day of my bed sentence, where my daily activities include icing my foot, elevating it, listening to the magnetic fields, facebooking, drinking a beer and falling asleep immediatly.

Got an email from my mom and it said "Jenny darling it can only get better from here." I hope she's talking about more than my foot. This is what my idea of better looks like.

I really love my friend Sarah's apartment. The day her photos popped up on Instagram, I actually found it difficult to sleep. The next day I rearranged the furniture in my bedroom into a MUCH more functional and appealing layout. I love her apartment in a creepy way! I stare at the photos when I'm feeling blue or need inspiration.

Play

I want to talk about exercise and specifically, how much I love it. I don't go as much as I'd like to, but hopefully that will change very soon!

Two nights ago I off work early, and biked home, making strides cause Robyn was singing about how you should Call Your Girlfriend and I love that song. Then my bike seat suddenly fell off and I hit the pavement. A group of kids were hanging out and drinking on the bridge above and they started screaming, “WHAT THE FUCK! ARE YOU OKAY!”
I got up, help my bike seat in my hand, and raised it in the air just like that last scene in the Breakfast Club when the guy holds the diamond earring in his hand and does a fist pump.

“I’m okay!” I called out and they all cheered. I managed to walk away with three big scrapes on my foot and nothing else, Thank God.

But the next day I bartended for 7 hours on my sad scraped foot and the damn thing swelled and burned, and now I can barely walk.

And do you know what I thought about this morning? The very first thing I thought about was exercise. And how badly I want to move, and sweat, and lift, and run and stretch. I picked up Lula Play, the little booklet that came with the magazine cause that was the closest thing I could reach. And the whole thing was about exercise!

It included a ton of interviews with women who are athletes and fashion girls alike, talking about why they love the exercise that they do – whether its pilates, ice skating, running, tennis, surfing. I really loved reading it.

No one mentioned the gym. I happen to really love the gym and will probably be a member for life, so I just took their questions and answered them myself cause I’m bored, and lying here with an elevated foot.

I also like walking in nature, biking with a secure seat and ice-skating.

What do you love about going to the gym?

It’s my favorite way to start the day – it forces me to eat breakfast, gets me out of the house, into air conditioning, energized and feeling productive.

What do you love most about it?

When I get to the gym, even if it’s just for half an hour, I lose the hungover feeling I get from working till 4 am all the time. It clears my head.

Why is it so important for you to exercise?

When I’m not exercising, something is wrong. My life is out of balance. The happiest times I remember also coincide with working out 4 or 5 times a week with ease. Usually it’s when I’m (f)unemployed.

How does working out make you feel about your body?

SEXXXXXYYY. I like working out and watching the “depression padding” inevitably come off – those extra pounds that pile on cause of stress, sadness, weird times, etc.

If working out were a girl, what would she be like?

Focused and faraway, all in the same girl. Neurotic, independent, peaceful and happy.

Something crazy happened to me.

First, to tell this story, I have to admit that I have an OKCupid account. I made it in September when I moved back to Toronto, and until a week ago, it sat pretty idly. Then I got a message that was very exciting. An incredibly gorgeous guy (my age, jewish, tall) messaged me. We quickly found a regional similarity - we both grew up in North York. A message later, and it turned out, all our lives, we have lived on the same street. The street my parents still live on and will be selling in a few months. I got excited. Retold the story about 15 times to the regulars at my bar when they asked me how I was doing, what's new?

We arranged to meet for a walk down the wintry ravine at the end of the street. My mom curled my hair. I packed 4 beer. We looked at photo albums of me and the boy in junior kindergarten. She told me she knows his dog. And his mom. A very nice woman.

We went on the date, talked a lot. Was there a spark? I'm not sure. He said "We should do this again" I said I'd love to.

So far, I haven't gotten a call. The hopeless romantic in me may love the story of how we met, more than the guy himself.

Oh, but did I mention...We met on Valentines Day.

Being Sick Is Boring

Being sick is boring...I don't even have an appetite, so eating for excitement isn't even an option. But eat I must. So my second pot of soup is on the stove. Does anyone else find making your own sick soup depressing?

So we're in 2012 now. My new years resolution is to spend less time surfing the internet for videos, images and messages that fill a void of boredom or loneliness. The Internet can be an incredibly large time suck. 2012 will be the year of productive interneting!

Lots have happened since my last post...I moved back to my hometown Toronto, got a bartending job, started an internship at WORN fashion journal, turned 22, experienced heartbreak, fell off my bike, picked up some ice skates...

Now that the waters have settled and the temperatures are dropping, I feel inspired to get posting again. I'm more obsessed with clothes than ever before - Working for WORN has made me more thoughtful about fashion - the politics, history, personal stories, subcultures, ideas and contexts behind what we wear.

I wore the above outfit to work (who says bartenders have to look slutty?) I love my bar - every shift is an opportunity to play dress up and try new things. But more on that later!!!

Last Wednesday I got together with Yuli Sato to take photos for her etsy shop Digest and Curtsy. She's a miracle worker. I was sad and super distracted that day and was worried the photos weren't going to turn out - but a good photographer takes all the work out of it! I'm so happy with how they turned out, especially the first one. Thanks Yuli xx

Now I'm off to pick up my new reading glasses. Have a good one :)

Chance Co promo photos

In April I watched a series of peaceful minute long films made by CHANCE to promote the summer collection, and I immediatly thought "thats the kind of summer I want to have". A summer of tranquil moments, reading, and lots of nature. I have one month left in Montreal, some great books to read, beaches to discover, parks to lie in, and four little videos to watch for inspiration. So what do I want to do today? Everything and nothing.
