I want to talk about exercise and specifically, how much I love it. I don't go as much as I'd like to, but hopefully that will change very soon!
Two nights ago I off work early, and biked home, making strides cause Robyn was singing about how you should Call Your Girlfriend and I love that song. Then my bike seat suddenly fell off and I hit the pavement. A group of kids were hanging out and drinking on the bridge above and they started screaming, “WHAT THE FUCK! ARE YOU OKAY!”
I got up, help my bike seat in my hand, and raised it in the air just like that last scene in the Breakfast Club when the guy holds the diamond earring in his hand and does a fist pump.
“I’m okay!” I called out and they all cheered. I managed to walk away with three big scrapes on my foot and nothing else, Thank God.
But the next day I bartended for 7 hours on my sad scraped foot and the damn thing swelled and burned, and now I can barely walk.
And do you know what I thought about this morning? The very first thing I thought about was exercise. And how badly I want to move, and sweat, and lift, and run and stretch. I picked up Lula Play, the little booklet that came with the magazine cause that was the closest thing I could reach. And the whole thing was about exercise!
It included a ton of interviews with women who are athletes and fashion girls alike, talking about why they love the exercise that they do – whether its pilates, ice skating, running, tennis, surfing. I really loved reading it.
No one mentioned the gym. I happen to really love the gym and will probably be a member for life, so I just took their questions and answered them myself cause I’m bored, and lying here with an elevated foot.
I also like walking in nature, biking with a secure seat and ice-skating.
What do you love about going to the gym?
It’s my favorite way to start the day – it forces me to eat breakfast, gets me out of the house, into air conditioning, energized and feeling productive.
What do you love most about it?
When I get to the gym, even if it’s just for half an hour, I lose the hungover feeling I get from working till 4 am all the time. It clears my head.
Why is it so important for you to exercise?
When I’m not exercising, something is wrong. My life is out of balance. The happiest times I remember also coincide with working out 4 or 5 times a week with ease. Usually it’s when I’m (f)unemployed.
How does working out make you feel about your body?
SEXXXXXYYY. I like working out and watching the “depression padding” inevitably come off – those extra pounds that pile on cause of stress, sadness, weird times, etc.
If working out were a girl, what would she be like?
Focused and faraway, all in the same girl. Neurotic, independent, peaceful and happy.
