I love dogs more than the mom in Juno

Saturday, May 31, 2008

I'm reading this book right now. It's about a dog from the owners point of view. It doesn't sound like much, I know. But the writer, J.R. Ackerley is brilliant. Its one of the best books I've ever read. Ackerley describes Tulip, with loving and poignant detail and finds humor in all the right places. While describing the way she 'marks her territory' he writes, "The expression on her face is business-like, as though she were signing a check."
Amazing. I think this is the kind of book that you can either love or loathe. But I have a soft spot for dogs. I've had cats all my life and I'm not crazy about them. I was hoping that my parents would not bring any more cats into the house so that one day we could have a dog.

But my kitten has been growing on me this week:

Until she farted on me...

Charlotte is the shit

This is my good friend Charlotte Cornfield. Aint she preeetty?
Charlotte also happens to be one of my favorite folk artists.
If you've never heard of her, I'd say you're in for a treat.

I went to her show last night at a bar on Queen West and it was wonderful to see her perform. Her music is catchy and honest and her gentle lyrics have the ability to capture a feeling in me that I can't quite place. A mixture of being young and sad and happy at the same time. A mixture of having my hand held, kissing a snow flake off someones cheek, drunkenly running around a fountain for no reason.
She played a song last night called Kipling Bus, about the ideas that drift into your head when your dreaming at the bus stop. I would die if I could get a copy of the lyrics, they are so beautiful.

As my friend Luisa described, "At her best moments, there’s something of Mirah in her: the ability to casually drop a line that makes you at once giggle and shake your head sadly."

Last I heard. her new EP "It's Like That Here" is available on Itunes.
But if not, you can get a taste of it from her myspace: http://www.myspace.com/charlottecornfield

Luisa wrote an amazing review of her CD for Streethawk. http://www.streethawkmagazine.com/wpf/?p=44

P.S. Can someone PLEASE tell me when Luisa is coming to Toronto!? because this blog is slowly becoming about her and she doesn't even know it! Teehehe

AJs Vision

AJ keeps having a hilarious reoccurring dream about me. He envisions me wearing a sweet outfit, that includes a tailored blazer and "a black crispy cream hat with gold detailing."
I love that boy.

AJ, is that what you were thinking? Cause if it is, this look is pretty fucking rad.

Ghost World

Saturday, May 24, 2008

I just finished reading Ghost World, a comic book about two sarcastic girls who do random things in a small nothing town. I liked all the references to youth culture but I found myself rushing to finish it. Nothing happens.
It was made into a movie. I vaguely remember watching it with my mom. I remember being bored by that too.

I watched the trailer this morning and now I'm intrigued to give it another chance. Thora Birch is in it and I've been a fan of hers ever since she played the little girl in "Hocus Pocus".

Letters

Monday, May 19, 2008

A couple months ago my lovely friend Luisa wrote me a letter.

The picture above is the back side of the envelope, which Luisa made herself. I just reread the letter she wrote and its something to treasure. Even her cursive is beautiful - its elegant and loopy and shes just such a talented sincere writer.

Anyways, I really enjoy writing letters and recieving them, so if you've got my address and want to stay in touch this summer, I would love to hear how things are going via snail mail.

Flowers are Purdy

Monday, May 12, 2008

I bought this dress two days ago with my friend Dan (his blog: trendytitties.blogspot.com) We went to Value Village and another thift store across the street.

While shopping, I found that my eyes were drawn to floral patterns in the same way that hipsters flock to plaids. I tried on two floral dresses, floral shoes and a floral FANNY PACK!
I regret not buying that.

(I found this image by typing "floral pattern on a couch" into the google search engine. Thats the look I'm going for. You say tacky? I say fabulous!)

My brother is going to mock me later for saying that.

Home Is Where the Heart Is

Friday, May 9, 2008

This is the outside of my apartment. I love where I live so much. I bike through the streets and I cant help but smile!

I've been living here for about a week. My brother is coming this weekend to help me paint my room. I have asthma and can't be around paint fumes. I want my room to be creme. It would be boring if I didnt mix it with wallpaper. Something like this:

Except in shades of gold and creme/white. Should be nice.
Speaking of home, I really miss Toronto. I'm not sure what I'm doing in Montreal anymore.

Free Digs

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

I’ve been working in the stock room of American Apparel for about a month now and today I was given $100 to spend on new clothes!
I went on a pant strike this winter and wore tights almost every day. It got cold. The problem was, I couldn’t find any pants that I truly loved. But now it’s summer and my pant strike has officially ended. But today, I welcomed a nice pair of jeans and a t shirt into my life.

I also got this shirt:

The jeans are from American Apparel as well. They were given to me on my first day. The jeans were all sized wrong and so they were given to the staff. They are slimming, comfortable, classy. But mine haven’t gotten much wear yet. The problem is there kind of…sort of…really two sizes too small. I can’t sit down in them. I can’t do up the button.
Evidence:

HAHAHA! Not cute.

I hope to blog more now that summer is here. I just got a new camera from my parents. But I don’t have internet in my new apartment. It’s like that saying: When one door closes, another opens. But for me, it’s the opposite.
When one door opens, another closes.
How pessimistic.
Peace!

The Princess and the Goblin

Friday, May 2, 2008

My boyfriend made a really scary face last night and I was like: "AHH! Who do you look like!?" He had to hold the pose for a while until I shouted out:
"Oh my God. You look like the Goblins from The Princess and the Goblins."

Im STILL scared of that movie. I got it at Mc Donalds in a Happy Meal back in the days when McDonalds still made those amazing little pizzas. Its about a princess in a castle who follows a magical string into a cave full of Goblins. The Goblins want to shread her and her family to pieces. But they are terrified of singing. And the little mining boy sings this song throughout the whole movie to save the princess:

We watched this video after he made the face TWICE and it tripped us out so much! My parents are driving up to Montreal this weekend to help me move into my new apartment and I kind of want them to bring The Princess and the Goblin. Has anyone seen this movie!?
